At the end of July, on a particularly hot and sunny Sunday, a small team from Oasis took part in Margate’s inaugural ‘The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever’, a day which has been growing in prominence around the world since the first world record attempting flashmob in celebration of Kate Bush’s birthday took place in 2016. Hosted by Simon and Steve from GRASS Cliftonville CIC, and sharing the honour with the wonderful local baby bank charity Mama to Mama, we donned our red dresses and joined over 300 spectacular Kate’s dancing to the iconic song to raise money and awareness of our charities.

We were thrilled to learn at the end of the dancing that the event had raised an incredible £2,108 for the two charities, to which we also added £300 from donations on the day. It was wonderful to see so many from our local community turn up to support our charities; we were honoured to speak to some survivors of domestic abuse, who had used Oasis services themselves and were ready to tell their stories and do what they can to help those experiencing abuse now to get the help they need.

The greatest gift you can give another human being is their freedom. Thank you for helping me regain mine”

The aim of the day – other than the phenomenal dancing – was to raise money and awareness for the charities. Against the backdrop of what was a joyous day full of community spirit, the statistics are sobering: in the UK, one in four women, and one in five adults, experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. In the last year, Oasis have helped over 1,500 adults and nearly 400 children to escape domestic abuse, heal and rebuild their lives. The need for these services is ongoing, and at the heart of everything we do at Oasis is the goal of giving survivors of domestic abuse the life they really deserve.

This is why events such as these, and the astounding support from the community, matter. By raising vital funds, having a platform to reach out to those who may need our help, and by sharing the story of what we do, we can continue to build support and be there for the families who need us, every day of the year.

If you’d like to join in with this vibrant event, while supporting Oasis and Mama to Mama, tickets are available for 2025 here.
