In February, we hosted a webinar as part of our Professionals Series, designed to enhance understanding of domestic and economic abuse among finance professionals, financial advisers, and Family Finance lawyers. With 45 engaged attendees and nearly 60 organisations signed up to receive the recording, the session proved to be an invaluable opportunity for learning and professional development.

Key Takeaways from the Webinar

One in five people in the UK have experienced financial abuse in an intimate relationship, ranging from being prevented from working to coercion into debt. Abusers often exploit financial systems, including taxation, to maintain control over victims. This webinar highlighted how professionals are uniquely positioned to identify warning signs and provide support.

Our expert speakers provided insights into this critical issue:

  • Sofia Thomas CTA AAT of Juno Tax discussed the complexities of financial abuse, the risks professionals should be cautious of, and best practices for advising clients in these sensitive situations.
  • Holly Broadley of Oasis Domestic Abuse Service shed light on the red flags of financial abuse, using case studies to illustrate real-world scenarios. She also offered practical strategies for professionals looking to support victims effectively.

Attendees praised the session:

“an excellent and informative webinar”, “such an important message”, and “well-paced, well-presented, informative and just the right length. Worthy subject expertly articulated.”

Following the event, a toolkit of resources was shared, providing professionals with guidance on identifying financial abuse, responding appropriately, and referring clients to organisations like Oasis for specialist support.
